Set out through the heart of Šumadija on a journey connecting some of the most important chapters in Serbian history – from the First Serbian Uprising to the rise of modern Serbia under the Karađorđević dynasty.
The thematic route “In the Footsteps of Karađorđe” connects Viševac, Orašac, Topola and Aranđelovac, creating a journey through the places where the foundations of modern Serbian statehood were laid. From Karađorđe’s birthplace in Viševac, through revolutionary Orašac, where the uprising began, to Topola and Oplenac – the spiritual and symbolic heart of the Karađorđević dynasty – this is history that is not simply read about, but experienced.
Yet this route is about much more than the past.
It leads through a landscape of rolling hills, vineyards beneath Oplenac, family estates, traditional villages and some of Šumadija’s most celebrated wineries and distilleries. Along the way, travellers encounter the aromas and flavours that have shaped the identity of central Serbia for generations – homemade food, local cheeses and kajmak, fruit preserves, rakija, fine wines and recipes passed down through families.
Here, history lives alongside everyday life.
Visitors can walk through former centres of revolutionary Serbia in the morning, enjoy lunch overlooking the vineyards in the afternoon, taste premium wines and fruit brandies, and end the day in the peaceful countryside surrounded by the landscapes that have witnessed centuries of Serbian history.
Warm hospitality is perhaps the thread that connects it all. Whether visiting a museum, vineyard, monastery, restaurant or rural household, travellers encounter the open-hearted welcome for which Šumadija has long been known.
“In the Footsteps of Karađorđe” is therefore more than a route – it is a journey through history, nature, tradition, gastronomy and living heritage, revealing Šumadija at its most authentic, vibrant and memorable.
Cultural and Historical Highlights
Petrovi Dvori – Viševac, Municipality of Rača
The ethno-complex “Petrovi Dvori” is located in Viševac, the birthplace of Karađorđe Petrović, leader of the First Serbian Uprising, and represents one of the natural starting points of the route.
The complex was built in 2004 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the First Serbian Uprising and was designed as a faithful reconstruction of the household of Karađorđe’s father, Petar.
Traditional timber buildings, a cellar, dairy house, stable and other structures recreate the atmosphere of a typical Šumadija household and offer visitors an impression of the rural environment in which the future leader of the uprising grew up.

A small beekeeping museum adds another layer to the experience, while the memorial fountain dating from 1924 preserves the memory of the site’s historical importance.
At the centre of the complex stands a monumental statue of Karađorđe, created by sculptor Stanimir Pavlović and cast from approximately 1,200 kilograms of artillery shells – a powerful symbol of struggle, sacrifice and freedom.

Karađorđe’s Town – Topola
Karađorđe’s Town in Topola is one of the places where the story of modern Serbia began to take shape.
Built by Karađorđe himself, the complex became the political and military centre of revolutionary Serbia and his de facto capital during the First Serbian Uprising. Some of the most important decisions of the uprising were made here, while the foundations of a future Serbian state were gradually being formed.
Today, visitors can walk through a historic complex that includes the restored residence with its tower, the church and bell tower, the old school building and the monumental statue of Karađorđe.
Rather than simply displaying history behind glass, Karađorđe’s Town allows visitors to enter the landscape in which it happened – walking through the same surroundings once crossed by insurgents, military commanders, political leaders and ordinary people.
It remains one of the most evocative places for understanding the period when Topola stood at the heart of revolutionary Serbia.

Oplenac – Mausoleum of the Karađorđević Dynasty
Rising above Topola, Oplenac is one of Serbia’s most important historical and cultural complexes and the spiritual centre of the Karađorđević dynasty.
Its most recognisable landmark is the magnificent Church of St George, built as the mausoleum of the Serbian royal family.
The church is renowned for its extraordinary mosaic interior, composed of more than 40 million individual pieces, creating one of the most remarkable monumental interiors in this part of Europe.

The wider complex also includes King Peter’s House, with its museum collection, the Winegrower’s House, today used as a gallery space, as well as the King’s and Queen’s villas.
A visit to Oplenac is a natural culmination of the historical part of the route – a place where architecture, art, royal history, family memory and national identity come together in an exceptionally powerful setting.
From the surrounding hills and vineyards, visitors can also understand why Topola became inseparable from the story of the Karađorđević dynasty.

Today, the winery operates as a historic wine monument and museum within the King Peter I Foundation, preserving the story of royal vineyards, winemaking and the broader development of Šumadija’s wine culture.
For travellers, it offers far more than a traditional museum visit. It creates a connection between dynastic history and one of the region’s most important living traditions – wine.

The Historic Site of Orašac
Type: Heritage / Cultural and Historical Attraction
Few places are as deeply connected with the birth of modern Serbia as Orašac.

At Marićevića Jaruga, on the religious holiday of Sretenje in 1804, Serbian leaders gathered and launched the First Serbian Uprising under Karađorđe Petrović.

That moment marked the beginning of a long struggle for liberation and statehood and became one of the defining events in modern Serbian history.
The memorial complex includes a museum exhibition, the 19th-century Church of the Ascension of the Lord, the memorial fountain at Marićevića Jaruga and the historic memorial school.
The museum exhibition follows Serbia in the period preceding the uprising, the gathering at Orašac, the most important battles, the life and personality of Karađorđe Petrović, and the organisation of government and military structures between 1804 and the collapse of the uprising in 1813.
For anyone interested in Serbian history and national heritage, Orašac is not simply another stop along the route.
It is one of its essential chapters.

It lives in the vineyards, in family recipes, in village houses, in stories told across the table – and in the warmth with which every guest is welcomed.
