SoulFood Route Serbia – A Gastronomic Journey Through the Flavours, Traditions and Identity of Serbia
Heart of the Land. Taste of Identity.
At a time when travelers around the world are increasingly seeking authentic experiences, gastronomy has become one of the most meaningful ways to discover the culture, history, and people of a destination. It is from this idea that SoulFood Route Serbia was born – a unique gastronomic route connecting different regions of Serbia through their flavours, traditions, local producers, and stories passed down through generations.
The route was developed within the project “Culinary Trail of the Ethnic and Local Cuisine in the Danube Region” with the aim of showcasing the richness of Serbia’s local and ethnic cuisines, promoting sustainable tourism, and supporting communities that preserve the country's authentic gastronomic heritage.

SoulFood Route is far more than a list of restaurants and tasting venues. It is a journey through Serbia, stretching from the plains of Vojvodina and the vineyards of Fruška Gora, across the fertile orchards of Šumadija, to the cultural and historical centers that have shaped the nation’s identity for centuries.
When Local Becomes Luxury
The philosophy of the route is built upon the principles of Zero Mile Gastronomy – a concept based on the use of local ingredients, support for small-scale producers, and the preservation of traditional methods of food and beverage production.
Visitors do not simply discover dishes; they meet the people behind them – winemakers, rakija producers, farmers, artisans, and chefs whose work preserves the authentic tastes of Serbia. Every ingredient has its origin, every recipe has its story, and every destination represents a piece of the country’s cultural identity.
For this reason, SoulFood Route is much more than a gastronomic guide. It connects food, culture, nature, and local communities into a unique experience that offers a deeper understanding of Serbia.
Kragujevac – A Centre of Wine and Rakija Culture
Šumadija is considered one of Serbia’s most important regions for wine and fruit brandy production. Gentle hills covered with vineyards, orchards of plums and other fruits, and a long-standing tradition of food production have shaped the gastronomic identity of this region for centuries. Today, in the heart of Šumadija, a contemporary culinary scene is emerging—one that respects heritage while creating new values and experiences.
One of the key points along the SoulFood Route is the Wine & Rakija Hub Kragujevac, a unique restaurant and interpretation center dedicated to the promotion of Serbian wines, fruit brandies, local products, and the gastronomic heritage of Šumadija. Conceived as a meeting place for producers, hospitality professionals, experts, and food enthusiasts, the Hub serves as a space where tradition is explored, interpreted, and experienced through a contemporary lens.
Here, visitors can participate in guided tastings, discover different varieties of wines and rakijas, enjoy authentic regional specialties, and engage with producers who have preserved their knowledge and craftsmanship for generations. Through carefully designed gastronomic programs, workshops, and themed events, the Wine & Rakija Hub contributes to the preservation and promotion of local identity by connecting gastronomy with culture, tourism, and education.
Another important stop on the route is Gastro Komitet 27, a restaurant that presents the contemporary face of Šumadija’s gastronomy through a modern culinary approach. Relying on high-quality local ingredients, seasonal products, and creative interpretations of traditional recipes, Gastro Komitet 27 demonstrates how heritage can inspire new gastronomic experiences. Its concept combines a relaxed atmosphere, thoughtfully crafted dishes, and a contemporary view of regional cuisine, making it an essential destination for lovers of fine food.
This section of the SoulFood Route tells the story of Šumadija as a region where food, wine, and rakija are integral parts of everyday life and cultural identity. From traditional recipes and local producers to modern restaurant concepts, Kragujevac and its surroundings offer one of the best opportunities to experience the authentic flavours of Central Serbia.

Novi Sad and Vojvodina – Guardians of Family Recipes
Vojvodina is a region where history can be read through flavours. At the crossroads of different cultures, peoples, and traditions, a unique gastronomic heritage has evolved over centuries, creating the distinctive identity of this part of Serbia. For this reason, an important section of the SoulFood Route leads through Novi Sad and its surroundings, where tradition and modern life naturally share the same table.
The restaurants Đenka and Sokače stand as authentic guardians of Vojvodinian cuisine and lifestyle. Their menus feature recipes passed down through generations and carefully preserved from oblivion. Traditional cured meats, hearty cooked dishes, meat specialties, seasonal vegetables, and recipes characteristic of Vojvodinian villages testify to the richness of the region’s culinary heritage. Beyond the food itself, these venues preserve the spirit of Vojvodinian hospitality, where every guest becomes part of a story that lasts much longer than a single meal.
Near the center of Novi Sad, beneath the walls of the Petrovaradin Fortress, lies Nucleus, a venue where gastronomy transcends traditional boundaries and enters into dialogue with art, culture, and contemporary lifestyles. Through creative menus, carefully selected ingredients, and a modern approach to cuisine, Nucleus represents the new face of Vojvodinian gastronomy, demonstrating how local identity can inspire innovation and unique culinary experiences.
This segment of the SoulFood Route reveals Vojvodina as it truly is—a plain rich in flavours, traditions, and people who have preserved their identity through food. From family recipes and traditional taverns to modern gastronomic concepts, Novi Sad and its surroundings are an essential stop for anyone wishing to discover the authentic culinary story of northern Serbia.
The Flavours of Srem and Fruška Gora
In the regions of Srem and Fruška Gora, gastronomy is inseparably linked to wine culture, fertile land, and a rich agricultural tradition. For centuries, this area has been one of Serbia’s most important culinary and wine-producing regions, where outstanding wines, authentic local products, and recipes shaped by diverse cultural influences come together.
In the heart of Srem, NEST, the restaurant within HOGO Hotel in Inđija, offers a contemporary interpretation of local flavours through carefully crafted menus inspired by seasonal ingredients and regional recipes. By combining modern culinary techniques with authentic ingredients, NEST represents a new generation of gastronomic destinations that respect tradition while presenting it in innovative and creative ways.
On the slopes of Fruška Gora stands MV Monogram Restaurant, where nature, wine, and gastronomy come together in a unique setting. Surrounded by vineyards, orchards, and some of Serbia’s most beautiful landscapes, the restaurant embraces a philosophy based on local ingredients, carefully selected wines, and respect for regional traditions. Here, the flavours of Fruška Gora are transformed into sophisticated gastronomic experiences that unite authenticity with a contemporary culinary approach.
This part of the route represents the meeting point of land, wine, and food. From the plains of Srem to the hills of Fruška Gora, visitors can discover a region where culinary identity has been shaped through generations of winemakers, farmers, food producers, and hospitality professionals. Today, Srem and Fruška Gora stand among Serbia’s most significant gastronomic destinations, where every glass of wine and every bite tells the story of its origin.
Cultural Diversity on a Plate
One of the most distinctive values of the SoulFood Route is its presentation of the gastronomic heritage of national minorities that have contributed to Serbia’s cultural richness for centuries.
Particular attention is given to Roma and Bunjevci cuisine, whose recipes, customs, and culinary practices preserve the authentic identities of their communities. Roma gastronomy is known for its rich flavours, bold aromas, and vibrant culinary traditions that reflect the history and way of life of the Roma people. Bunjevci cuisine, on the other hand, is based on simple yet carefully prepared ingredients, combining agricultural heritage, rural traditions, and strong family values.
Through the SoulFood Route, visitors have the opportunity to explore these distinct culinary worlds and understand how cultural diversity shapes the contemporary identity of Serbia.
More Than Food – A Story of People and Place
Beyond restaurants, the route includes wineries, distilleries, family farms, artisan food producers, rural households, and cultural attractions that together create a unique network of authentic experiences.
Each destination offers an opportunity to meet local communities, understand the origins of products, and discover the connection between food, nature, and cultural heritage. In this way, gastronomy becomes a tool for preserving tradition, supporting local economies, and promoting sustainable tourism.
A Route That Continues to Grow
SoulFood Route Serbia is an open platform that continues to evolve and expand. New restaurants, wineries, distilleries, food producers, rural households, and cultural institutions are constantly joining the network, united by a shared vision of preserving and promoting the authentic flavours of Serbia.
